Step into the Witty World of Wilde:

Auditions for The Importance of Being Earnest!

Do you have a flair for the dramatic, a knack for witty repartee, and a secret desire to live a double life (at least on stage)? Then prepare to be Earnest!

Emerald Theatre is thrilled to announce auditions for Oscar Wilde's sparkling comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest!

This is your chance to bring to life some of the most iconic characters in English literature: the charming rogues Jack and Algernon, the formidable Lady Bracknell, the hopelessly romantic Gwendolen and Cecily, and more! Wilde's brilliant dialogue, hilarious situations, and razor-sharp social commentary offer actors a unique opportunity to showcase their comedic talents and explore the depths of these delightfully eccentric characters.

The Importance of Being Earnest Character List

Jack Worthing  28-38, male

The play's protagonist.  He leads a double life - in the country, he is known as Jack.  In London, he is known as Ernest.  As a baby, he was discovered in a handbag in the cloakroom of Victoria Station by an old man who adoped him and made him guardian to his granddaughter, Cecily Cardew.  Jack is in love with his friend, Algernon's cousin, Gwendolen Fairfax.

Algernon Moncrieff  28-38, male

The play's secondary hero.  Algernon is a charming, idle bachelor, nephew of Lady Bracknell, cousin of Gwendolen Fairfax, and best friend of Jack Worthing, whom he has known for years as Ernest.  He has invented a fictional friend, Bunbury, an invalid whose frequent sudden relapses allow Algernon to wriggle out of unpleasant or dull social obligations.

Gwendolen Fairfax  21-30, female

Algernon's cousin and Lady Bracknell's daughter.  She is in love with Jack, whom she knows as Ernest.  She is high fashion and can skillfully navigate society, speaking always with authority on matters of taste and morality.  She is sophisticated, intellectual, cosmopolitan, and utterly pretentious.  Gwendolen is fixated on the name Ernest and says she will not marry a man without that name.

Cecily Cardew  18-25, female

Jack's ward, the granddaughter of the old gentleman who found and adopted Jack.  Like Gwendolen, she is obsessed with the name Ernest, but she is even more intrigued by the idea of wickedness.  She has fallen in love with the idea of Jack's fictional brother Ernest in her mind and has invented an elaborate romance and courtship between them.

Lady Bracknell  40-60 either male or female playing a female

Algernon's snobbish, mercenary, and domineering aunt and Gwendolen's mother.  She married well and her primary goal in life is to see her daughter do the same.  Lady Bracknell values ignorance.  She is cunning and narrow-minded.

Miss Prism, 40-60, female

Cecily's governess.  She is an endless source of cliches.  She highly approves of Jack's presumed respectability and harshly criticizes his "unfortunate brother."  She has romantic feelings for Dr. Chasuble.

Reverend Chasuble, 40-60, male

The rector on Jack's estate.  He has secret romantic feelings for Miss Prism.

Lane, 40-60, male identifying

Algernon's manservant.

Merriman, any age, male identifying

The butler at the Manor House, Jack's estate in the country.
